Converter pages promise pairs. The records show coverage

CloudConvert's MP4 to AVI page, one of this site's winner pages, promises a single pair: this format in, that format out. The question underneath every converter search is wider: which formats do editors list at all? Our directory records 205 editing tools, harvested from this site's own records in November 2026, and 134 of them publish a format list. Counted across those 134, the coverage is narrower than the converter pages suggest.

The format census

Formats listed, of the 134 records that publish a format list
FormatRecords listing it
MP467
MOV41
AVI33
MKV22
GIF22
WMV17
ProRes15
WebM13
MPEG9
HEVC9
FLV2
AV11

One honesty note before the reading: the records do not split import from export, so a listing means the format is named as supported, not that the tool converts both ways. Even with that slack, MP4 is the only format named by half the records, and the drop after MOV and AVI is steep.

What the tail explains

MKV at 22 of 134 is why converter pages exist. The container is common in recordings and archives and absent from most editors' lists, so the file takes a detour through a converter before work starts; this blog's MKV posts answer the same gap from the other side. WebM at 13 explains the browser-delivery questions. At the far tail, AV1 appears in exactly one record, so the next web format is still a press release rather than a workflow, and FLV's two listings are legacy courtesy.

Check the pair before the project

The working rule: before a project starts, check your delivery format and your source format against the editor's list, in that order, because sources can be converted once and deliveries cannot. And when the file does open, stills are often the first deliverable; the Thumbnail Canvas pulls exact-size frames for thumbnails without opening a full edit.
